From Chaos to Calm: How a Capsule Wardrobe Transforms Your Travel Prep

Essential Tips for Creating a Versatile and Efficient Travel Wardrobe

If you're anything like me, you've had your trip planned for months, your credit card is paid off, and you're sitting on a Pinterest mood board outlining your trip aesthetic—yet somehow, 72 hours before takeoff, your suitcase is still empty.

Why is this part so tricky? After plenty of trial and error, I’m here to tell you it doesn’t have to be. I went from overpacking disaster to the minimalist under packer, and finally found the sweet spot: the capsule wardrobe.

What’s a Capsule Wardrobe? According to Nordstrom, it's “a collection of clothing and accessories that can be mixed and matched to create many outfits for different occasions.” The aim is to have a versatile wardrobe without excess. For more details purchasing one from scratch (not directed to my budget friendly girlies), check out Nordstrom's guide here.

Given my collection of unique thrifted 90s pieces, limiting myself was a challenge. But the key was to bring minimal, versatile, wrinkle-free clothing that could be mixed and matched.

Here’s my approach:

  1. Essentials: I always start with a favorite black ribbed t-shirt and black corduroy button-up. These items layer well with colorful pants and accessories.

Travel Tip: Ribbed clothing is less prone to wrinkling and packs more efficiently!

  2. Neutral Bottoms: I consistently reach for a pair of staple black jeans, off-white joggers, and maroon linen pants. These neutrals mix seamlessly with other items. Include a crop top, long sleeve, and tank top for layering options.

Travel Tip: Choose basic, unpatterned pieces for maximum versatility.

  3. Accessories: Bring statement earrings, layered necklaces, and a few headscarves or scrunchies to elevate your outfits.

  4. Shoes: Let me hold your hand when I tell you this- stick to just TWO pairs—your go-to walking shoes and a versatile sandal. For a mountain trip, swap one pair for hiking boots. Trust me, fewer shoes mean a lighter suitcase!

Travel Tip: I swear by Eddie Bauer packing cubes for staying organized and maximizing space. Any brand works but I’ve found these to expand the best due to their mesh lining and last the longest feel free to snag a set of your own!

Finally, add a small bag of toiletries, makeup, and one swimsuit, and you’re all set! Even afterall our efforts, you - like me, may still find yourself sitting on your carry-on to zip it up, but you’ll feel triumphant walking through airport security with just your carry-on and backpack—no lost luggage hassles here!

I’m SO proud of you for embracing a capsule wardrobe for your travels. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you can get on the road—and you might even find yourself gravitating towards a consistent color scheme when shopping in the future, making life even easier!

Happy packing and safe travels!
